Painkillers for pain

Total cancer pain

Total cancer pain includes all pain components. Doctors are able to control it, which is important, because cancer is currently not a death sentence, just a chronic disease. Relieving pain supports the healing process and improves the patient’s life comfort. How to relieve total cancer pain?

Total cancer pain is not easy to control, but you can fight it effectively. The source of cancer pain is not only the tumor itself, which presses on the nerves, causes inflammatory reactions, and inferior tissue supply. It is also caused by diagnostics and the treatment itself: operations, irradiation, chemotherapy. It is also a consequence of body wasting, pressure sores or constipation. For such components, so-called Basic pain overlaps short-term but very strong attacks of breakthrough pain.

Total cancer pain: a new treatment regimen

Doctors are increasingly aware of cancer pain, which is why the treatment scheme has changed. Drugs are selected for each patient individually. They are administered regularly so that their concentration in blood is constant. They are therefore not taken at the time of pain, just like an antibiotic at certain intervals. If they cease to function, they are exchanged for a stronger dose, increased. Also, preparations with different mechanisms of action are combined and adjuvant (complementary) drugs are added, which have a large share in therapy. In addition, agents are used to relieve piercing pain. Where possible, long-acting preparations are selected. There are also treatments that release from suffering. Cancer pains, unfortunately, are not always treated effectively, and this is due to the wrong choice of drugs or their doses, as well as some resistance from both doctors and patients before the use of opioids associated with drugs. There is still a belief that they can cause addiction, increase the risk of respiratory depression (severe breathing disorders). Meanwhile, with rational analgesic therapy, the selection of the right dose and form of the drug is safe, and the patients who take it are not drug addicts in the common sense of the word. Some are still needed even after curing cancer in connection with chemotherapy polyneuropathies or phantom pain. Thanks to them they can function normally.

Cannabis to treat pain

What do cannabis contain? They contain chemical compounds with analgesic effect, called cannabinoids. They are also produced by our body (like endomorphins, the equivalent of morphine), so they are not a foreign substance. Currently, cannabinoids are used in the treatment of neuropathic and neoplastic pain. Of course, patients do not receive marijuana from doctors, only the medicine containing these compounds. The preparation in the form of oral spray is registered in UK.

Plaster instead of a tablet

Some patches only work locally (eg warming, cooling, anesthetic with lidocaine), others are systemically. The latter are a transdermal form of administration of analgesics that have their counterparts in the form of tablets. However, they work longer, even for 3-4 days, because the substances contained in them are stored in adipose tissue after penetration through the skin. From it, they are gradually released into the bloodstream. In the case of such patches, it does not matter where it sticks.

Blockades for a painful problem

In general, an injection is called directly into the painful area (e.g., the shoulder or knee joint) of anesthetics and anti-inflammatory drugs (steroids). This treatment temporarily reduces the severity of pain and accelerates the healing of tissues. In case of chronic pain, when the pharmacological treatment fails, a different form of blockages is used, which for a long time inhibit the conduction of pain. They relate to chemical (neurolysis) or physical (thermolysis, cryolysis) nerve damage.
